The Manufacturing Process of Chrome Plated Rods

1. Raw Material Preparation

Material selection:Baokun carefully selected SAE 4140/4340 alloy steel (ASTM A322 ) or ST52 carbon steel (EN 10025 ) to prepare for subsequent processes.

In terms of chemical composition control, a spectrometer is used for real-time monitoring to ensure carbon content ±0.02% and chromium content ±0.15%.

Bar pretreatment:Ultrasonic flaw detection (ASTM E317): detect internal cracks/inclusions (sensitivity 0.4mm flat bottom hole)

Straightening treatment: Fully automatic roller straightening machine, straightness ≤0.1mm/m (ISO 2768-m)

2.Precision centerless grinding

Baokun uses the famous German CNC grinder to ensure grinding accuracy.

Process parameters:

Grinding wheel size: CBN 180# (rough grinding) / 500# (fine grinding)

Feed speed: 0.5-1.2m/min (adjusted according to diameter)

Dimension tolerance: h7 grade (DIN ISO 286), roundness ≤0.005mm

Online detection: Mahr laser diameter gauge, automatically records diameter fluctuations every 20 seconds

3.Induction hardening

Baokun uses professional equipment from the United States. Through precise control of feed rate and quenching, we achieve a uniform hardening process, ensuring that the chrome-plated shaft has high wear resistance and fatigue resistance after induction hardening.

  • Induction heating: The surface of the shaft is heated to the quenching temperature (usually 800-850°C) through an induction coil.

  • Cooling system: Equipped with a high-pressure spray device (spray pressure 0.2-0.5 MPa), commonly used water-based quenching liquid (PAG solution) or oil cooling system.

  • Hardening depth control:Adjust the induction power and frequency according to demand to control the hardening depth (usually 1-3 mm).

– Subsequent treatment: After induction hardening, low-temperature tempering (150-200°C) is required to relieve residual stress.

4. Hard chrome plating

Using proprietary chrome plating solutions, we carefully control every aspect of the chrome plating process. Our advanced ion exchange chrome repair system maintains the quality of the plating solution, ensuring excellent cleanliness and results.

Plating process:

Three-level pulse plating (forward current density 50A/dm², reverse current density 20A/dm²)

Coating structure: micro cracks ≤50/cm (ASTM B456 Class S)

Coating control:

Thickness range: 0.05-0.15mm (segmented control, tolerance ±0.01mm)

Bond strength: thermal shock test (300℃→water cooling, 3 cycles without peeling)

Post-treatment: hydrogen embrittlement elimination (200℃×4h baking, in accordance with AMS 2430)

5.Superfine grinding

Baokun uses the famous Swiss universal grinder to achieve the process goal of surface roughness Ra≤0.1μm (DIN 4768 N5).

Grinding parameters:

Grit size of abrasive belt: diamond abrasive belt 3000#

Line speed: 25m/s, axial feed 0.03mm/r

Coolant: Fully synthetic water-based coolant (pH value 7.5-8.0)

6. Inspection and Packaging

Finally, each chrome bar undergoes rigorous testing to meet our quality standards. Once verified, we safely package the products for delivery, ensuring they arrive at our customers in pristine condition.

Key inspection items:

Coating hardness: Micro Vickers hardness HV0.3 ≥ 850 (ISO 6507)

Corrosion resistance: Neutral salt spray test ≥ 72h no red rust (ASTM B117)

Packaging standards:

Vapor phase anti-rust film (VCI) + heat shrink packaging (IP67 protection grade)

End protection: Engineering plastic sheath (anti-collision damage)
